I’m a fantasy sports freak. I check the computer around 36 or 37 times a day during the season to see if anything has happened. I love this. You know you know the feeling. How many of you have been in fights with significant others because you’re so inconsiderate and because of “all the time you waste on that stupid computer. No, I don’t care that Kirk Hin-whatever had 13 assists and 15 points”? Don’t care?! They think we’re inconsiderate? At least I’m taking mine, and Kirk’s feelings into consideration.
So here’s the deal, we had this idea for a fantasy sports search engine which will provide you with the best articles related to basketball. We have gone through and weeded out the sites we thought were sub-par (I hate that term…shouldn’t it be, over-par?) and provided you with the ones we feel are the most informative. We welcome other sites information and contributions to our fantasy world. We want you to have an all encompassing experience, getting options from the best sites out there. We are certified fantasy geeks, and will provide you with our personal rankings, predictions and cold hard facts that will send you to the glory land (winning).
As a sidebar, I just wanted to let you know that writing this three paragraph column has taken me nearly 45 minutes because I’m obsessively checking my fantasy baseball team (we’re currently in the playoffs and I’m battling my arch rival). But we want you to know that this site will be readily available with the statistics you need, and with the search options to make things convenient for you. You be Popeye. We’ll be the spinach. Go get em’ sailor.
It’s always a good draft preparation exercise to take a look at the best players from last year. This is by the straight numbers, no attempt has been made to project next year’s points, and no considerations have been made for position depth, or injuries. All that comes next…
- Gilbert Arenas - 28.4 pts / 4.6 reb / 6.0 ast / 1.9 stl / 0.2 blk
In Gilbert’s own words, he was cookin’ chicken and shrimp all season long. It also certainly didn’t hurt that he made the most 3 pointers in the league. Expect the same menu for the 2008 season.
- Shawn Marion - 17.5 pts / 9.8 reb / 1.7 ast / 2.0 stl / 1.5 blk
With 17.5 points, close to 10 rebounds and more than 1.5 blocks, steals and assists per game, you knew Marion was going to be close to the top of this list. Having Steve Nash, the NBA assists leader and fellow top 10 member, on the same team helps a bunch.
- Kobe Bryant - 31.6 pts / 5.7 reb / 5.4 ast / 1.4 stl / 0.5 blk
When a guy pours in 40+ points in 25% of the games that he plays in a season, you know he’s good. Obviously, Kobe led the league in scoring last year.
- LeBron James - 27.3 pts / 6.7 reb / 6.0 ast / 1.6 stl / 0.7 blk
Surprisingly, Lebron’s numbers were down a bit from ‘06. Still, there’s nothing wrong with a guy averaging more than 27/6/6. Expect more of the same.
- Jason Kidd - 13.0 pts / 8.2 reb / 9.2 ast / 1.6 stl / 0.3 blk
Like the Suns’ Marion and Nash, the Nets’ Kidd makes the 2007’s top 10 along with teammate Vince Carter. Does Jeff’s strategy of having good teammates on your team make sense? I think so.
- Kevin Garnett - 22.4 pts / 12.8 reb / 4.1 ast / 1.2 stl / 1.7 blk
Will Garnett and new teammate Paul Pierce both be in next year’s top 10? Barring injury, I’d say there is a good chance. Garnett led the league in rebounds last year.
- Steve Nash - 18.6 pts / 3.5 reb / 11.6 ast / 0.8 stl / 0.1 blk
We’ve already talked about Nash and Marion, and mentioned that he led the league in assists last year. I almost moved Nash up a few more spots for dating Elizabeth Hurley.
- Vince Carter - 25.2 pts / 6.0 reb / 4.8 ast / 1.0 stl / 0.4 blk
He dunks well, he scores points, he rebounds, he passes the ball, and he shoots 3’s. Plus, he played in every game last year, which was huge for Vince owners. I almost moved Vince up a few spots for making french toast that one time.
- Elton Brand - 20.5 pts / 9.3 reb / 2.9 ast / 1.0 stl / 2.2 blk
20 + 10 + 3 + 1 + 2 = good fantasy player.
- Tim Duncan - 20.0 pts / 10.6 reb / 3.4 ast / 0.8 stl / 2.4 blk
See above equation. Tim’s weak free throw percentage put him just below Elton, but didn’t drop him out of the top 10.
Honorable mentions:
Josh Smith, Dirk Nowitzki, Dwight Howard, Marcus Camby, Leandro Barbosa, Andre Iguodala, Rafer Alston, Kirk Hinrich, Tracy McGrady, Ron Artest, Amare Stoudemire, Ray Allen, Dwayne Wade, Allen Iverson, Rashard Lewis
